What are School Community Councils?

School & Community Councils are new school-level groups that have been legislated by the provincial government to be in every school. School & Community Councils are replacing the current local board of trustees and local school advisory committees, but, to some extent have a different mandate or role. The Greenall High School School and Community Council is a group of community members, school staff members and students who meet monthly to examine issues pertinent to the many issues at hand in our schools today.

School Community Councils will work with parents and community members to:

develop shared responsibility for the learning success and well-being of all children and youth; and

encourage and facilitate parent, community and youth engagement in school planning and improvement processes. (Retrieved September 26, 2006 from http://www.sasked.gov.sk.ca/branches/pol_eval/scc/index.shtml)

On September 26, 2005, Learning Minister Andrew Thomson received the report of the Local Accountability and Partnerships Panel (LAPP). The Panel provided recommendations for enhanced parent and community participation in schools and a provincial framework for local accountability for Kindergarten to Grade 12 Education.
